Washington, February. 20—
The Department of Transport announced plans to build a 15-mile per-hour ground pas transit system between the Washington suburbs and Dulles International Airport.
Transport secretary John a spoke this week at the Washington Regional Government Council.
Volpe described the system for the first time and said that his departure hoped that the system would operate in a timely manner so that the pre-international transport position could be held in Dulles in next May.
The high-speed train only takes 6 minutes on the 13 th.
Five miles between Dulles and McLean, Va.
This will give the ministry the first opportunity to test Passenger responses to some of the wet ground transport systems it has been developing.
Dulles-mclean line is actually a \"demonstration project\" and is not intended to provide a full commute to and from the airport.
The core of the system is a so-called tracking air cushion vehicle that has been put into use in some European cowl. tries.
However, unlike the current model, vehicles planned for airport projects will be used in traditional air breathing propulsion systems for advanced linear induction motors.
The advertising vehicle will carry between 60 and 80 passengers and their luggage and will travel within the u-shaped concrete passage or guide rail.
The car will lift about inches from the surface of the rail with stable air from the electric compressor, and the linear induction motor will accelerate the car forward.
Advertising motor with small noise and no pollution is a relatively new development in the ground propulsion system, promising faster speed than railway or wheel vehicles.
The motor is similar to the conventional rotary motor, which is cut and leveled and then extended along the distance of the route.
Centered on the guide rail, it will be a T-shaped aluminum guide with a height of about 25 inch.
The reaction rail replaces the circular stator in the rotating motor, while the coil inside the vehicle performs the function of the circular rotor.
The induction between the two produces the force of a linear vector instead of a circular vector and pushes the car forward, just as the two magnets push each other.
The most important feature of the linear induction motor is that it is not affected by the wheel or other contact with the ground, thus transmitting its forward thrust.
The maximum speed of Ve hicles driven by a rotating traction motor connected to the wheel is about 215 miles per hour, because the adhesion of the wheel to the ground limits the effective thrust generated.
The speed that can be achieved depends only on the size of the motor.
Operating the current of the motor and air compressor will reach the vehicle through a small, freely floating pick-up arm, which is the only part of ve hicle in contact with the road bed.
Braking is achieved by reversing through the \"polarity\" or current flow of the motor, thus changing the direction of the driving force, a process similar to the reversal of the engine thrust when the aircraft lands.
The department has detailed plans for a similar high-speed system that will connect the Los Angeles International Airport in downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, however, there is a problem in ensuring nec\'s basic rights to this line, it makes the completion date uncertain.
It is difficult to obtain suitable routes for such high-speed ground trains, which must be relatively free of curves, which may limit their actual use in crowded urban areas where they are most needed.
For example, rignts in New York City? ?
The straight passage between the city center and the Kennedy Airport will be daunting.
Advertising recognizes this and the Transport Department is working on a plan for a high-speed train that will operate in a partial evacuation pipeline that can be placed underground or underwater, thereby eliminating the need for right of way
However, the cost of tunnel engineering must be significantly reduced before such a system is economically feasible.
A relatively straight line is the rail corridor between New York and Washington, which is currently used by Metro companies.
Transport officials said they were \"considering\" the future possibilities of tracking air-cushion vehicles between the two cities, as well as between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Public reaction to the Dulles line will play a role in preventing the completion of this intercity system.
Rohr, Ling-Temco-Vought and Grumman have obtained preliminary contracts for $100 per contract to investigate the route to Dulles and prepare cost estimates for construction, developed and designed for prototype vehicles.
The companies are bidding for a final contract to build the system.
The total cost of the project will be managed and funded by the transport department\'s Urban Rail Transit Authority, estimated to be between $20 and $25.
A version of the file was printed on page S23 of The New York edition on February 21, 1971, with the title:P. H.
Between suburban Washington and Dulles, air-cushion trains are planned.
